AI can write a stock analysis that reads like it came from a seasoned analyst. When a company reports earnings, the number that moves the stock often isn't the one it just posted — it's the one management says is coming next. A company can beat every estimate for the quarter and still drop 15% before lunch, all because of a single sentence in the outlook. If that has ever confused you, this is the piece to read.

That sentence about the future is called guidance, and it's one of the most misread pieces of the earnings ritual. Getting company guidance explained properly — what it is, why the market treats it as more important than the actual results, and how to read the difference between a genuine slowdown and management just being cautious — changes how you interpret every earnings report you'll ever see.

This guide walks through all of it in plain language: what guidance covers, why forward-looking numbers move prices more than backward-looking ones, how to read ranges versus point estimates, the difference between sandbagging and stretching, and — most importantly — how to track guidance changes quarter to quarter without getting fooled by either optimism or panic.

What company guidance actually is#

Guidance is management's own forecast for the company's near-term financial performance. It's the leadership team standing up and saying, in effect, "here's what we expect the next quarter — or the next year — to look like." It usually covers some combination of:

  • Revenue (the headline "we expect sales of $X to $Y")
  • Earnings per share (EPS), on a GAAP or adjusted basis
  • Margins — gross, operating, or both
  • Other operational metrics specific to the business: unit shipments, same-store sales, subscriber additions, bookings, capital spending, or free cash flow

Two things matter about that definition. First, guidance is a forecast, not a fact — it's management's opinion about a future that hasn't happened yet. Second, it's a forecast made by the most conflicted people in the room. Leadership has every incentive to shape expectations they'll later be measured against, which is exactly why reading guidance well is a skill rather than a copy-paste of the number.

Companies aren't legally required to issue guidance, and some deliberately don't. When a company does provide it, that outlook typically arrives in the earnings press release and gets elaborated on the earnings call. If the vocabulary here is unfamiliar, keep the Valarn glossary open in another tab as you read.

Why the market reacts more to guidance than to results#

Here's the part that trips people up. The quarter that just ended is, from the market's perspective, old news. By the time a company reports, analysts have spent three months modeling that quarter, and the stock price already reflects a consensus expectation of how it went. The actual result mostly confirms or adjusts a number the market had already penciled in.

Guidance is different. It's new information about a future that isn't priced yet. A stock's price is, at heart, a bet on future cash flows — so anything that changes the market's view of the future has more power to move the price than a report on the past. When management raises or lowers its outlook, it's effectively updating the assumptions underneath every valuation model watching the stock.

That's why the "beat but drop" phenomenon is so common. Consider a simplified, illustrative example:

  • A company reports EPS of $1.10 against a consensus estimate of $1.05 — a clear beat for the quarter.
  • But it guides next quarter to $1.00–$1.05, while analysts had been modeling $1.20.

The completed quarter looks great. The future just got marked down by roughly 12–17% versus what the market expected. The stock can fall hard despite the beat, because investors price the disappointing forecast, not the flattering rear-view number. We wrote a whole companion piece on this exact mechanism — why stocks fall after good earnings — because it confuses so many first-time earnings-watchers.

The practical takeaway: when you read an earnings report, train yourself to jump to the outlook first. The headline "beats consensus" tells you about a quarter that's already over. The guidance tells you what the market is actually going to trade on.

Ranges versus point estimates#

Notice that in the example above, guidance came as a range ($1.00–$1.05), not a single number. That's deliberate, and the shape of the guidance tells you something on its own.

Most companies guide in ranges because the future is genuinely uncertain, and a range is an honest admission of that. But ranges carry information beyond the midpoint:

  • The width of the range signals confidence. A tight range ("revenue of $2.48–$2.52 billion") suggests management feels it has good visibility — often true for subscription or contracted businesses where next quarter's revenue is largely already booked. A wide range ("$2.2–$2.6 billion") signals genuine uncertainty, which is common in cyclical, project-based, or early-stage businesses.
  • Where the market anchors within the range matters. Investors and analysts don't just look at the midpoint; they watch whether management's tone points to the high or low end. "We expect to be at the upper end of our range" is meaningfully more bullish than the same range delivered with a shrug.
  • A point estimate is a stronger commitment. When a company guides to a single number instead of a range, it's making a firmer promise — and taking on more risk of a visible miss.

There's also a subtler trap: the guidance midpoint quietly becomes the new bar. Once a company gives a range, the market often re-centers expectations on the midpoint. Beating the top of your own range is impressive; landing at the bottom, even though it's technically "in line," frequently reads as a soft miss. The range doesn't remove the expectations game — it just moves the goalposts to a new spot.

Valarn
